Alhaja de Regio

I am the Matriarch of the Casa de Gloria

and the mother of Espiritu and Regio. I know I am often referred to as the Queen, but I am much too humble to accept such an honor. I walk and talk softly. Nothing seems to bother me and I get along well with everyone. I am probably the most psychologically well-adjusted horse here!! However, I do guess that with royalty it becomes my responsibility to be gracious and kind to all of my subjects!

Gloria grooms me every evening while I am eating my dinner in the pasture. She hugs me a lot and says that I am her “calming spirit and her joy.” She really loves me for who I am. I am not as beautiful as the Princess is, nor as exciting as Marcas and I certainly don’t attract the attention that my daughter does!! However, this place would not be the same without me. I am the steady and predictable one and I am the best mother in the whole horse world. I have had five babies and I have loved and cared for all of them. I have the patience and understanding to know what they need and what to do to help them develop into kind and loving fillies and colts.

I am very spiritual and sensitive. There is nothing unusual about me except maybe the fact that I am blind in my right eye. That has not been a problem for me as it occurred, by accident, shortly after my birth. It is a fact that is ignored here and I am loved for my wonderful disposition and loving ways. Gloria gets very upset when the farrier or vet or anyone refers to me by asking, “Is that the mare with the blind eye?” She always makes a point of saying, “That’s Alhaja. Alhaja means jewel and SHE IS our jewel”

I have a job to do besides having all those wonderful babies. I work as a Therapist with Gloria and it feels good to be able to help the children and adults who come here with special needs. I once asked her what “special needs” meant?? She said that it means we are all “special with unique talents and needs and that if we recognize and support the “good” that is what will come forth and blossom in both the two leggeds and the four leggeds.”
